Public Library Hoover Chamber of Commerce City of Hoover Information - official site The City of Hoover was incorporated in 1967 and currently has about 65,000 residents. For a more complete history, we suggest reading the book, A History of Hoover, Alabama, and Its People, by Marilyn Barefield, published by the Hoover Historical Society in 1992, and available at libraries across Jefferson County. The Mayor of Hoover is Tony Petelos. He was elected in 2004 and serves a four-year term. The next municipal election will be in June 2008. Go to his official site by clicking here. The City Council is comprised of seven people. They are at-large members, not districted. They were elected in 2004 to serve a four-year term. The next municipal election will be in August 2008. Click here to access the City Council's official site. The City Council meets on the 1st and 3rd Mondays of each month at 6:00 p.m. in the Municipal Center on Municipal Drive near the Hoover Library. The work session is conducted on the preceding Thursday at 5:00 p.m. in the same location. Dates are published on the Council's official site. Public comments are allowed at both the work session and the Council Meeting. No prior notice is needed for citizens to speak. The Hoover School Community Information Network encourages citizens to engage in the discussions that affect or have the potential to affect our public school system. We hope to keep you informed of those issues to allow for public input. Minutes of Council meetings are posted on the official City of Hoover site. Click here to access those minutes. The Education Committee of the City Council is comprised of three members, Councilwoman Mari Morrison, Councilman Dr. Trey Lott, and Councilman Gene Smith, who currently serves as the liaison to the Board of Education. The Education Committee is responsible for recommending appointments to the Board in April of each year. Board of Education members serve five-year terms. For more information, click on the section entitled "Board of Education" under "District Information" on the menu bar to the left. The Board of Education is an autonomous Board and is not under the direct authority of the Council. Currently there are no scheduled meetings between the City Council and the Board of Education to enable them to share information. The Hoover School Community Information Network is working to see that quarterly public meetings be established to better inform the community of issues facing each body to ensure smooth coordination among the two bodies. The Hoover Chamber of Commerce maintains a "Hoover Schools" page on their website. The Chamber website is full of good information about the City of Hoover. The Chamber offers many benefits to its members and provides information to others about the City of Hoover. Citizens of Hoover are extremely fortunate to have such a wonderful resource in our city. The Hoover Library ranks fourth in the state for highest circulation, and first in Jefferson County. Take the time to explore their website, and visit them as well. Whether it's finding the right book to read for pleasure or learning a foreign language (check out their Rosetta Stone resource!), the Hoover Public Library offers it all.
